Third graders asked if they could spend their last day of art class doing origami. Marco volunteered to teach us all how to make an 8 point ninja star. We used the class' iPevo camera to demonstrate the small folds as Marco very patiently led his classmates through this challenging origami lesson. I was so impressed with Marco's teaching methods that he won the highly coveted Enthusiastic Teacher Award at the end of class.

My fifth graders all contributed to one rotoscope animation segment that became part of this international animation collaboration. You can see ours during the first segment beginning at the 25th second. I guess you can say we help get the rotoball rolling. We are so pleased to be a part of such an amazing video. Thank you David Gran, Art Teacher, Shanghai, China.

Dryden art students are entered into the McGraw-Hill STEMIE Award Contest with our Rotoscope Animation Collaboration. This Technology and Art project can be viewed here. Feel free to log in to the contest site and give our video a (REALLY GREAT) rating! Finalists will be selected in August. If we make it that far, we'll be asking for your votes:)

4th Graders finished their beautiful pop art dog portraits. We call it "Pup Art". See the gallery of images here on Artsonia. This lesson became quite a sensation a couple years back when one student made a Brilliant Mistake. See the videos below to learn about Shark Dog.
Two years ago I did this Pup Art project with 4th graders as well. An incredible thing happened during this lesson that taught us all a new lesson. Find out more in the Story of Shark Dog Video and the Shark Dog video below.

Three 5th graders stopped in before lunch today to give me a gift in the form of this serenade.
Thank you girls for all the years you shared your talents with me in art class and now for sharing your musical talents with me in this sweet song.

The Screen Test Student Fest Facebook page just uploaded picts from the Festival, but since my elementary students aren't on Facebook yet, I copied Rudy Lorejo Photography's images here.

I really love the iPhone/iPad game, Draw Something for how it trains the players to communicate words visually. This social media enhanced one-to-one game doesn't work very well in my classroom yet as it is designed. So, I made an offline version to play on the interactive board featuring a collection of my saved drawings from games I was playing over the past month. I had enough that each of my students can take one turn trying to guess the word and spell it correctly. This worked great with my first graders who are just learning to read, write, and grow their vocabulary.

You can download my game in PDF form here.
The next round for this game would be to let the students do the drawing after picking a random word from a hat. This will make a perfect end-of-the-year-we-can't-make-a-mess-in-my-clean-art-room-but-still-learn-and-have-fun Game.

By the way, did you notice that I'm sharing a file from my dropbox? Want to learn how to do this too. Watch my screencast video here.

This is our 6th year of burning digital portfolios in art class with our graduating 5th graders. I have a working portfolio for every student at Dryden on my harddrive that I add to each time we have a finished piece of art, video, or random snapshot. Students are always surprised to see the things that I've saved for them over the years. They each get a CD with their artwork and a shared folder that has anything from field trip pictures to snapshots from the first day of school in kindergarten.
Our portfolio envelop has a feedback form. Students who show their discs to their families, sign the form, & return it by next art class will be entered into a raffle for great prizes.

A group of 5th graders surprised me to daywith a bunch of paintbrush self-portrait puppets as a gift. They personified themselves as paintbrushes in the tradition of our YOUNG SLOPPY BRUSH (MIA since winter of 2010 -Learn more here). These brushes will find a home in my art room to remind me of my kind and creative students who will graduate Dryden soon. Thank you!
