This year I started doing some graphic design work for educators and app developers in my "spare time".  Some examples include: Compare-a-Twist app, PKCLsoft, EdGamer Podcast, iDig Video Podcast
So, I realized after 6 years of making Fugleflicks with my students, we still haven't had a real logo. So, I downloaded the Comic Life app for text, drew a little movie maker based on my former student, Kristina, in the Brushes App, created transparency in Art Studio app, and combined everything again in Comic Life.  I downloaded Logo Maker app and it wasn't doing it for me. I wanted something more customizable. Would definitely recommend the Comic Life app. I have the desktop version too. I was able to back up my work to my dropbox as a comic life file so I'll be able to work on it again on my desktop (sweet!).

Friday, April 27th was the BIG SCREEN debut of our two newest Fugleflicks at the Schaumburg Prairie Center for the Arts first annual Team Test Film Fest 2012.
Push up Your Sleeves (a short video that quickly demonstrates how to enter the art room featuring an original song performed, recorded, filmed, & edited by 5-2 students)
View behind the scenes video to see them working.
Elementary Musical (a musical introduction to the Elements of Art  featuring an original song performed, recorded, filmed, & edited by 5-3 students) View behind the scenes video to see them working.

Our fifth grade students were invited on stage to introduce their movies and discuss the filmmaking process while fielding questions from the host and audience. This uncut version shows their whole experience. What a great opportunity to have an authentic audience.
If you don't have 25 minutes to watch the students on stage fielding question, then consider taking one minute to see them accept their award below in this super short cut version.
After watching all of the team films our host announced the judge's pick for Best of Show.
Congratulations to Elementary Art Filmmakers!

We Knew Her When 04/23/2012

I just learned that a former Dryden Student  and Fugleflick Filmmaker Abigail (class of 2007) is going to play the lead role in her high school musical production of Sound of Music. Learn more here. This made me want to look back at the days we knew her when and celebrate her theatrical moments with us in the making of Young Sloppy Brush and ART-iculation (both were award winning student videos-see below).
Quote from Abigail's Parents:
"You have played a big role in Abigail's artistic/creative development, imprinting her at an early age with the confidence she needed to let her light shine. Please never underestimate the importance of believing for the best in kids, especially the shy ones!"
UPDATE: Just returned from watching Abby's Performance! Here she is as Governess Maria teaching the children how to sing.

Take a look in the May  2012 edition of School Arts Magazine to see my article called, Striving for Artistry. In this article I explain my strategy of creating videos with students for students to help motivate my young artists to try their best in the art room.

P.S. Read the article by Michelle Savran. She creates great art education animations for her students and even credits our Fugleflicks as an encouragement! We're honored:)

Fugleflicks are Student-Created Art-Related Videos.
The wiki that houses our index, tutorials, and so much more was featured today in the Wikispaces Blog.
Our Fugleflicks range from Classroom management topics to the elements of art.
Coincidentally, I ran across this Blog Post about Fugleflicks from Paul Hamilton (thx) where he shares his feelings about our videos and their potential impact in the classroom.
Let's celebrate these posts by sharing a few of our favorite Fugleflicks:

Swept Away: (classroom management) The tragic story of what happens when art supplies are left on the floor at the end of the school day told by the pencil, paper, and eraser left behind.
This video was created by a class of 4th graders in 2008. It screened in the Shortie Awards, Washington D.C. as a finalist for live-action video.
Deep Space: (art concepts-overlapping, foreground, middleground, background, relative size and placement on a page to create the illusion of deep space)
That's a lot to cover, but these three little third graders sing their hearts out to deliver the message clearly  in this short video.
White Spot Inspector: (craftsmanship) Teaching students to go back over their mistakes and turn their "rough draft" into a finished piece of art is a lot easier when I can just show them this entertaining little video..

First graders learned about color, line, and shape pattern while making these symmetrical mittens. Some even learned how to tie a bow for the first time! They watched our fun Fugleflick about pattern called REPEAT (and even sang along at our Repeat Karaoke Party.)
Take a look at their artwork below or view it on our Artsonia gallery here.

Who would have thought that learning could be so fun. My first graders had a blast singing along to the REPEAT Fugleflicks video about color, line, and shape pattern with my magic glowing wand.
Have some Karaoke fun yourself with this link.

There are other songs on my wiki too set up for Karaoke.
If you do...share your videos of students singing with us

I received this message yesterday from the Chicago International Children's Film Festival:

"We have selected your films Complementary in Every Way and The Glue Blues for the launch edition of the Chicago International Children’s Film Festival Online and would like to invite your participation. The films will be screened with no charge to the viewer, and no entry fee to you. Our goal is simple: to showcase the very best in films made by children and youth for other children and youth."

WOW! What an amazing compliment!

Our Fugleflicks are student-created art-related movies that teach us something useful for art education. We've been fortunate enough to have had some of these Fugleflicks screened at local, national, and international film festivals and student video contests.
View our Fugleflick Collection online on Vimeo. Use this index to get started.

Meanwhile, let's enjoy the best in films for children by children below!

There is only a few more days left before we break for winter...but we still need good listeners in the art room! How can we learn without listening? I made this Fugleflick video to remind my students what good listeners does. Use it as often as you need this week!
