Offline Draw Something

I really love the iPhone/iPad game, Draw Something for how it trains the players to communicate words visually. This social media enhanced one-to-one game doesn't work very well in my classroom yet as it is designed. So, I made an offline version to play on the interactive board featuring a collection of my saved drawings from games I was playing over the past month. I had enough that each of my students can take one turn trying to guess the word and spell it correctly. This worked great with my first graders who are just learning to read, write, and grow their vocabulary.

The next round for this game would be to let the students do the drawing after picking a random word from a hat. This will make a perfect end-of-the-year-we-can't-make-a-mess-in-my-clean-art-room-but-still-learn-and-have-fun Game.

Burning Digital Portfolios

This is our 6th year of burning digital portfolios in art class with our graduating 5th graders. I have a working portfolio for every student at Dryden on my harddrive that I add to each time we have a finished piece of art, video, or random snapshot. Students are always surprised to see the things that I've saved for them over the years. They each get a CD with their artwork and a shared folder that has anything from field trip pictures to snapshots from the first day of school in kindergarten.
Our portfolio envelop has a feedback form. Students who show their discs to their families, sign the form, & return it by next art class will be entered into a raffle for great prizes.

We use ARTSONIA as our online digital art gallery. This allows students to see their growth and learning over time before our Digital Portfolio Burning Day.

Our Brush with Fame

A group of 5th graders surprised me to daywith a bunch of paintbrush self-portrait puppets as a gift. They personified themselves as paintbrushes in the tradition of our YOUNG SLOPPY BRUSH (MIA since winter of 2010 -Learn more here). These brushes will find a home in my art room to remind me of my kind and creative students who will graduate Dryden soon. Thank you!

These symmetrical paper collage monsters were photographed with ipods and run through the percolator app by their creators. Our tradition continues (if all goes as planned). The kindergarteners learned the song, they created their bows, and Mrs. Deptula added me to the program. So, we will be performing in our spiffiest of attire The Kindergarten Song at the Kindergarten Tea. Here is a peek at our last minute rehearsal at the end of art class with K-4.

Thank you to my school community and beyond who have shared their kind thoughts with me as I learned that I wasn't chosen for the Golden Apple award. This process gave me a unique opportunity to feel your warm support for Dryden's Art Program and my contribution to it. I am very fortunate to be in such company doing as I do my job! ART Contests

I have some announcements for our Dryden Artists and Families about two art contests:

Celebrating ART.com has accepted almost 50 pieces of Dryden Art for their contest. This means they want to publish these pieces in their full color book after you give them permission.
If you received a note/postcard from me on their behalf please mail it in or go online with the password provided and respond by May 30th.

Sax is an art supply company that publishes a color catalog and sends it out to schools across the country. They are looking for student artwork to decorate their publication. If you would like to submit your student's artwork (pick one from the finished pieces on Artsonia) then fill this out and return it to me by May 30th.

It's about time Fugleflicks had a Logo

This year I started doing some graphic design work for educators and app developers in my "spare time". Some examples include: Compare-a-Twist app, PKCLsoft, EdGamer Podcast, iDig Video Podcast.
So, I realized after 6 years of making Fugleflicks with my students, we still haven't had a real logo. So, I downloaded the Comic Life app for text, drew a little movie maker based on my former student, Kristina, in the Brushes App, created transparency in Art Studio app, and combined everything again in Comic Life. I downloaded Logo Maker app and it wasn't doing it for me. I wanted something more customizable. Would definitely recommend the Comic Life app. I have the desktop version too. I was able to back up my work to my dropbox as a comic life file so I'll be able to work on it again on my desktop (sweet!).
