Five young animators met with me on Monday after school for one hour to learn to fly. Second grader, Sophie, won the iPad animation party prize offered through the Dryden Fundraising Raffle before spring break. She and 4 friends learned how to turn themselves into fairies that fly across the flower garden using 3 different apps on our art room iPads.
We won & raised over $10,ooo in resources for Dryden's Art Program this school year alone!
I began the 2013-14 school year with 2:1 access to iPads for my art students (see this post which explains how this happened) and ended with enough for 1:1. I NEVER dreamed it would really happen so quickly. By April 2014 all my students had iPads loaded with our favorite art apps so that we could animate, digitally paint, and easily curate our online art portfolios. So many doors are open now for my students for exploration, innovation, and art creation because of our many supporters, donors, and voters that actively promoted our fundraisers, voted for our contest entries, and donated generously to our crowdfunding campaigns.
We have a long tradition of entering contests for art, videos, and classroom projects to win resources for the art program and give students a chance for authentic audiences for their work. This year was no exception:
When my student teacher was in full takeover last fall, I decided to use my time to write as many grants as I could for more resources for the art program. I wrote way more than I received but we are so happy for these:
I began aggressively seeking donations by leveraging crowdfunding sites. I did lots of begging & promoting while many kind people donated to help us get the rest of our iPads.
Donor's Choose is an online crowdfunding site for teachers to raise money for classroom projects. Over the past few years Donor's Choose helped us raise money for 1/3 of our art room iPads. (See the breakdown here). We had many creative campaigns for helping to tell the story of why we wanted iPads so desperately in the art room. I was holding off on doing this project with the kindergarteners until we had enough iPads in the art room for everyone to create at the same time. That time arrived! Even though we are tired of snow aren't you excited to know we have enough iPads for K-3rd grades at Dryden to do 1:1 iPad lessons in art class?

I sincerely hope this is the last time I ask you to donate for iPads for our art room. After this Donor's Choose project is complete we will have 24 student iPads, enough for every child in every grade level at Dryden to not have to wait to create! This will be an amazing accomplishment and a HUGE community effort. We love iPads in our art class and have been working with your help at getting enough iPads for the art room to have one for everyone. We've ALMOST reached that goal. We are only TWO iPads short. We have 22 iPads with class sizes topping off at 24 students. The younger grades have enough, but the 4th and 5th graders aren't quite there.

I woke up this morning to a wonderful message in my email inbox:
"YOUR DONOR'S CHOOSE PROJECT WAS FULLY FUNDED!"
Thank you to the 17 donors who made this possible! These two additional iPads put our total art room iPad count at 22! This means when the iPads arrive we will able to do all class iPad projects with K-3rd grades!
(We are two short for our 4th and 5th graders).
This past week I tried to do a one day iPad project with a group of 4th graders without enough iPads. Some students were able to work independently but 8 of them had to double up. Who ever "went first" was able to complete their project while the one who graciously agreed to go second, didn't have enough time to finish. It was horrible to see 4 disappointed students leave the room when class was over simply because we were short on resources. The iPad is extremely fun to create on and to be excluded from the fun all around you is heartbreaking as well as a lost learning experience. I called those 4 students back into art class the following day during recess to give them a chance to have their turn to create. All of them happily traded recess for making art on iPads. I could tell they were relieved that I saw their plight. I DO see the plight and I am extremely motivated to do what I can to solve this problem. We need a 1:1 iPad to student ratio in the art room. That's the most logical solution for meaningful technology integration. It sounded like a HUGE mountain to climb, but with the talent of my students, the support of the Dryden community, and the MANY MANY supporters we have found online, our goal is within reach! I don't know if you noticed, but we're really into getting iPads for our art room. It's been 18 months since we won $5000 in the McGraw-Hill STEMie awards which bought our first 8 iPads. Since then we've written grants, fundraised through Artsonia, Donor's Choose, Edbacker, and entered lots of contests and it's paying off!
