I wanted to take a moment to post some of the great things I've learned as I network and share at the Illinois Computer Educators Conference in St. Charles, IL. Today I had the honor of conducting my first workshop at an ICE conference. I had a group of 15 teachers & technology integrationists learning how to Create on iPads. We used my website to guide us through a few lessons designed to help attendees become familiar with techniques, project ideas, and apps. We had fun mirroring our projects up on the screen using airplay and the Airserver app.
Thanks to the folks at Percolator app and Doink app for donating app codes to my workshop attendees. They were a BIG hit!

These are examples of our collaborative drawings. We used a template from my website as a guide to draw what the surrealist artists would call, an Exquisite Corpse. We drew a portion & passed the iPad to the person on the right until it was complete all while we explored the tools and techniques of SketchbookX.

On Friday, I presented a session called, Creative Digital Art Projects that put STEAM into STEM where I shared a whole bunch of ideas, student projects, videos, etc. from my art program. I had a nice size audience, a borrowed speaker system from Carol Broos (thank you) because the room was too large for my little speaker, and a VIP attendee named Wesley Fryer. He blogged his notes from my presentation on his Speed of Creativity site here. He put out the tweet below about my presentation.

New Reason to Celebrate,We're Finalists

We just learned that our Heart House Art Service Project video was chosen as a finalist in the NEXT VISTA.org Service via Video Student Contest.

Buy a T-shirt with your child's heart house to help celebrate and raise money for the two iPads the art room still needs.

Our 1st graders, brownies, girl scouts and 5th graders with the help of parent volunteers made heart houses to raise over $1275 to help St. Rose High School in Belmar, New Jersey after their school's art program, located in their basement, was devastated by Super Storm Sandy.

The three videos chosen as finalists will be watched by judges from around the world in April, and the winner will be announced at the Next Vista Awards Night on April 26th. Each finalist will receive a certificate, as well as a $100 donation to the cause identified when the video was submitted.

Yeah! This will make our fundraising total= $1375

Dryden is currently having an Art Tech Drive. Artsonia will donate 20% from each of your purchases through our online digital art gallery to help raise the funds to buy the art room an iPad. We are working towards our goal of having 2 students to very 1 ipad in the art room. We are only two iPads away of this goal thanks to your support during our McGraw-Hill STEMie Award contest which is bringing $5000 dollars worth of iPads to our Art Room!

Creating on iPads

I lead an Art Education Association of Indiana sponsored an iPad workshop with art teachers on Saturday, Feb. 23rd. We explored techniques, ideas, and some apps that would enhance their art curriculum using my Creating on iPads resource page as a reference. Thank you Jill Sayers for organizing this event and Jay Blackman for setting up the tech. Together we drew collaboratively, from photos, in layers, from scratch, emailed art, practiced using the dropbox, grabbing templates, using photographic effects (both web-based and app-based), and created animations using the amazing Doink App. We even looked at how to build a Weebly website to host your links, photos, videos, and files to give access to your students.

Congratulations to 3 Dryden Artists

We have some wonderful news for three of our Dryden Artists this March (Which happens to be Youth Art Month). Jack B., currently in 4th grade, had his art, "KIND" selected for permanent display at the new St. Alexius Women and Children's Hospital in Hoffman Estates. He has been invited to VIP reception along with other student artists who have also had pieces chosen to add cheer to the halls of this institution.

Ben G., currently a 4th grader, had his piece, "ART SMART" chosen for the Illinois Youth Art Month poster that will be distributed to every school and congressional leader in the state to help celebrate art education in our schools during the month of March.

Robert J., currently a 3rd grader, had his piece, "Different is Good" chosen for the Illinois Youth Art Month poster also! How amazing to have both artists chosen in one year from the hundreds that were submitted across the state of Illinois.

iPads + Web App=By George that's fun

Now that my 2nd grade students finished their amazing George Washington Portraits (view them here), we checked out the iPads for the day and put the images on a dollar bill using the Festisite money effect. Now that you can upload images on iPads to most websites and add images into emails we went ahead and tried all these steps on iPads... and it worked!
I had the class images in my dropbox with a link to the folder. Students just followed the steps below and clicked on my links to go where they needed. What was really easy was the link for my email address which you can find as a choice for a link in Weebly. That link auto-filled my email address so all the students had to do was add the photo and their names in the subject line.

Cultural Arts Fair: See ART & Fugleflicks

Congratulations to Klaudia (4th grade) for winning the program cover design contest. (See all entries) Her artwork (shown to the left) will represent Dryden on the cover of the program handed out the night of the Cultural Arts Festival on Friday, March 8th at Thomas Middle School beginning at 6pm (free admission).
Dryden will also show two banners full of student art (certificates will be sent home with the selected student artists on Feb.22nd. See the banners below show the art chosen for display). That night will also be the big screen debut of the new Fugleflick, Different is Good
and a chance to see our all school Common Core Crazy video which debuted at the District Variety Show once again.

P. S. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the cultural arts festival event on March 8th. Mrs. Beihoffer has volunteered to stand in my place. Thank you! I will be at the National Art Education Conference in Texas to accept my award for Western Region Elementary Art Teacher of the Year. This is the first year I'm missing the event, so please stop by and pose for your photo with Mrs. Beihoffer so I can have some great pictures of what I missed and celebrate with you:)

Flying Fifth Graders

Fifth graders brought their iPads to art class for the past couple of weeks to work on a digital figure drawing of themselves flying in their pajamas. This image will be the starting point for a creative writing and illustration lesson that will include animating their figures across a landscape. See the entire gallery of images here.

I created the movie below as I was working on this idea. I am hoping their animations can be pieced together into a video with music giving students a chance to combine their art, music, technology, and storytelling skills into a collaborative project.

Did you notice that the figures are all in a similar pose? That is because to help students draw their figures successfully, we imported my sketch of a generic figure as a layer in Sketchbook Express. The artwork was drawn on a separate layer over the sketch and filled with color using the pour feature. The background is empty now so we can erase it using instant alpha in Keynote so we can animate it across their drawn landscapes.

Different is Good

Fugleflick filmmakers have been working since October on a video that promotes diversity metaphorically using art. Our original song drove the imagery and our understanding of surrealism from last year's work with Rene Magritte inspired much of what you'll see. Students used animation tools in Keynote and green screen effects in iMovie to create this dream-like movie. See if you can identify the 15 pieces of famous art shown throughout the movie.
