Self-Portraits in 3/4 pose by 5th Grade

I love to draw portraits. That's my thing. My most challenging portrait lesson is the 3/4 pose. I designed a step-by-step tutorial for my students to guide them through mapping out the face, measuring the features in proportion to the whole, and creating a contour line drawing of their face turned to the side so only 3/4 show. Digitally, Differently, and Dynamically

Handout for the District 47 iPad Workshop

I was asked to do an iPad workshop for the art teachers of District 47 in Crystal Lake today. I was able to show them a bunch of creative ways to make art with their students digitally to explore concepts differently and demonstrate understanding dynamically. (The numbers on the sheet refer to my 175 STEAM art ideas found here.)

They made a short monster dance video

Teachers used iMotion HD to create stop motion animations in small groups. The app can be set to manual mode and display a "ghost image" of the previous shot so you can make small changes to create the illusion of movement. The app converts your series of images (we took 30 pictures and set the frame rate to 10 frames per second) to a movie file. I made it into a gif with ezgif.com

Paper Circuit Robot Digital Extension

My fifth graders are currently working on robots that will light up with a paper circuit designed to have a button in the robot design that closes the circuit. The other day I saw the latest cover of Newsweek magazine. It featured a couple of robots in an American Gothic Parody. My idea, though different, was inspired by this image and by my students' desire to explain all the cool things their robot "does". I thought they could share these ideas in a Newsweek Cover format and learn some graphic design tricks at the same time.

iPad Workshop in Antioch (again)

I was invited to come back to Antioch SD 34 to do another iPad workshop this week with a SUPER group of folks. See my post from the first workshop here. This time we were able to play with a bunch of new art lesson ideas, new apps, and try green screen effects.

We imagined ourselves as superheroes as we created a Newsweek Magazine cover in Pic Collage after masking out the green screen with the SuperImpose app. Learn more here.

We used Sketchbook Express to create portraits in layers. One for black lines, one for base colors, and one for tints and shades. Feel free to use my template. We also tried a collaborative photo collage.

We took a minute to use DOINK to haunt the room with a semi-transparent ghost.

Super iPad Workshop in Portage, IN

I met an amazing team of art teachers on Saturday in Portage, Indiana. They gave up a day of their holiday weekend to work on some teaching ideas and strategies for incorporating their class set of iPads into their art programs. Learn more about their iPad initiative during their NAEA conference presentation this Spring.

We practiced a wide range of techniques and art lessons that were open ended enough that teachers could modify them into the format that best supports the learning objectives needed in their curriculum. This collage to the right is from a Pass the Portrait game/activity where students use my portrait template to begin drawing the features of the face in a layer over it. Then they pass their iPad to the next person who then continues the drawing. This can be modified in many ways. Perhaps each student is given a style of art or portraits made from different artists to reference for their contribution to each portrait that is passed their way. This lesson demonstrates how to share a template, draw in layers, and create a collaborative piece, use sketchbook express, and turn in the artwork via email.

We experimented with the iMotionHD app to create this silly stop-motion animation. Our inspiration for this video came from OK Go's primary color video for Sesame Street. I created a safeshare link here. I turned it into this gif using the 5seconds app.

We also tried our hand at rotoscope animation. We each created one frame in this tiny animation of 13 frames. I shared out the images from my dropbox. Each teacher pulled it into SketchbookX and drew a contour line drawing. Then emailed the results with the image number as the subject. I combined the images quickly using Gifninja. See it here.

We played around with the Artstudio app's magic wand to create a transparent png to layer with my Newsweek template and text. This lesson can be used across the curriculum. See all my template, handout, examples, and Newsweek resources here.

We used Sketchbook X to create a photo collage where students would begin with their own "selfie" and layer on their classmates' features digitally. I saw this idea first from art teacher, Ms. Oliveri. Here is her post.

We also explored the many possibilities of DOINK including my transparency lesson (see Really Spooky Landscapes) and my perspective lesson (see Godzilla's perspective.
I wrote a grant to receive an all-school purchase of the DOINK iPad app and a class set of styluses. View my grant here. We only spent a few seconds trying out the Crown fountain interactive public art lesson with color lake effect. So much to explore and not enough time. I guess one day wasn't enough:)

Use the "You Matter" manifesto from Angela Maiers to spark a conversation with students about the difference they can make in the world now and/or in the future.
Or celebrate International Dot Day by asking students how they will make their mark one day. Turn the table on tabloids by celebrating good character and good choices in life.

Creating on iPads: A Practice Page

I'm gearing up for the school year by collecting my resources and making them easily available for anyone who wants to learn some of my tips for how to create on the iPad. There are tons of apps in the app store, but I tried to limit my ideas to only a few so that we can work with what we have on our school iPads while I explore other apps and begin writing grants to get them in the future. (100 ipads=$$ for each app purchase) so I'm trying to keep it simple. Below is a screen shot of the new page I added to my website. Visit it here.
