Last year I was asked to contribute project ideas to the Green Screen Maker Space book by Todd Burleson. The book features 24 step-by-step green screen projects to create in the classroom with students.

The Superimpose app is one of many ways to PHOTOSHLOP on the iPad. I used it to re-imagine these pieces of art with Fuglestad faces. This would be a fun lesson for my students that could easily connect with history, popular culture, fine arts, and prompt a writing activity.

Fuglestad Jones

Mr. Fuglestad is a good sport. He posed for this Indiana Jones photoshlop with his best Harrison Ford expression. (He did pretty good, didn't he?) The lighting, tilt of his head, and overall coloring didn't match but I adjusted this with the superimpose app (and procreate app).

mask your face w/ brush and blur edges

Filter to match color, contrast, brightness

transform to match tilt, size, & proportions

Use gradient mask to blend

The gradient mask helps you photoschlop like a pro. They feather the two layers gradually.

Try adding a filter over the finished piece to even out the coloring and/or texture

Creative Projects to turn Stem to STEAM

I have done a presentation called Creative Digital Projects that turn Stem to STEAM at three conferences over the past couple of years. These 45-50 minute presentations include a bizillion ideas in a media packed keynote file that I have trouble sharing online. However I did create a condensed version of the presentation for the AOE Online Conference last summer. The presentation has been behind a pay wall for one year and can finally come out for public consumption now. The following lessons are shared in the video below. Learn more from my links. iPads Revealed our inner Superheroes

Our art project was inspired by this graphic for Dr. Horrible

In 2008 I saw an advertisement for Dr. Horrible (see above, right) and thought it would be so cool to create an image similar to this but use it for good, not evil. I designed a paper collage lesson and tried it with second graders. Then the following year I thought it would be fun to do this digitally. Back then (before iPads) I didn't have a simple way for students to create graphic designs. I did much of the work behind the scenes. It was about 5 minutes of work per student to create these silhouette superheroes. (What was I thinking?) Now that we have iPads everything is different. Every second grader was able to do every step of this project in one simple app.Yeah! We can learn so much more now and show the world our inner superheroes!

Visual Metaphors

How would you show the big spirit of a young child? There are many solutions to that question and in each of these solutions you would be exploring a visual metaphor.
I played with the idea of doing a lesson like this with my second graders using a large shadow to represent their dreams, hopes, spirits in contrast to their small size.
To make this digital image students would pose in a way that expresses their hopes for their future, wishes for the world, dreams for their lives. This activity would engage figurative body language where they let their pose tell the story they want to communicate. C.C.S L.S.4.5 The artist statement will being with "I can…

Animated Superhero Silhouettes

Animated Superhero silhouettes! Why not? They are a great way to tie in character education and creative writing in your art lesson. We already talked about making superhero silhouettes using Keynote in this past post which includes great resources for helping your students brainstorm ideas.
And I also demonstrated how you can now make silhouettes on the iPad using Superimpose app in this post where you will find a video tutorial that shows exactly the simple steps to make the silhouette effect. Why not make it animated using the Green Screen app by DoInk with an animated radial design from Kaleidoscope Drawing Pad app (free)? The first thing I would have students do is create a radial design in this app and save it as movie to the camera role. Then they would need to pose in front of green screen in their superhero pose. These two items would be needed to make the following effects using Superimpose to create a silhouette (and maybe an inverse of the silhouette if they rather try it that way). I showed both effects below. Then layering the silhouette with the chroma filter to erase the green and reveal the animation from the layer below (see my screenshot below).

Lesson inspired by Man of Steel

The Man of Steel film is full of life lessons in the battle between good and evil, choices, and hope for a better world. One thing that struck me as an art teacher was that the symbol that appears on "Superman's" outfit is not really an "S" as we mere humans would assume, but rather the Kryptonian symbol for hope. This made me ponder an art lesson that asks students, "What superhero powers do you have to make the world a better place and what would your symbol be?". See brainstorm handout below.

Superhero Silhouettes

Today I was asked how we made our Superhero Silhouettes. I thought I would try to explain with a screencast video (below). We first did a kinesthetic activity where we all became the superheroes found in this Superhero ABC book using body language to warm up for our photo. We tried to imagine ourselves as a superhero of good character defend the pillars of character and picked a pose that matched our powers. Here is their worksheet that helped them brainstorm. Second Graders are transforming themselves into Superheroes to defend the pillars of character in this back lit silhouette graphic. They had to use body language to communicate their super powers as they work to make our world a better place. See their images here.
