American Gothic Spoof-o-Matic

A student asked this week, "What makes a painting famous?"
I thought about it for a minute and said, when it becomes popular enough to be recognizable. One way you can tell that a piece of art is famous is because it found its way to the popular culture as a spoof.

How would you answer this?

My fourth graders are preparing to create a spoof of Grant Wood's American Gothic.

Technology Rich and Connected

My K12Online Conference presentation, Teaching Art in a Technology Rich and Connected Classroom went live today. Elementary Musical at CICFF

Today our Fugleflick Filmmakers had the honor of seeing their student-created, art-related video, Elementary Musical, screen to an international audience at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival. Our students (currently 6th graders) were invited on stage afterwards to talk about their movie making experience.

Dryden's Art Program has been making award-winning Fugleflicks with volunteer filmmakers for six years now. This movie is now our 5th Fugleflick that has screened at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival. Have a Fugleflick film fest below.

In 2007 Young Sloppy Brush was screened at CICFF. This brush then was asked to screen in Italy and Australia the following year. In 2009 it traveled around the country to art rooms in the Brush with Fame tour. He went missing before the end of his trip. In 2009 Let's Be Green when we Clean screen at the CICFF. This video teaches students to conserve, recycle, and be smarter about cleaning the art room. It was a national finalist in the National Geographic Find Your Footprint Student Video Contest. See the framed T-Shirt in the hallway outside the art room. This video is full of special FX.

In 2009 Complementary in Every Way screened at the CICFF. This love story between Red and Green very cleverly teaches the primary, secondary colors, color mixing, and introduces many related concepts. This story grew from a silly conversation in a 4th grade class. They sketched out the story while a group of 5th graders played the roles.

In 2010 Glue Blues screened at the CICFF. This musical video told the plight of misused & mistreated bottles of glue from their own perspective. The 5 filmmakers had very creative storytelling strategies as they sang, danced, and spoke of how to help cure the Glue Blues. This movie was featured in a Wonderopolis post about how glue works.

In 2012 Elementary Musical screened at the CICFF. This musical introduction to the Elements of Art has won a number of accolades since it was created in early 2012. It won the Arlington Heights School District's Youtube Festival, Best of Show for the Screen Test Team Fest, and tied for first place NextVista.org's student video contest.

Celebrating our McGraw-Hill Award

A representative from McGraw-Hill came to deliver our HUGE $5000 check for our second place win in the STEMie Awards. Our animators from the class of 2012 were invited back to celebrate our win, watch the video of our project, and eat lots of cake!
Back in May all 100 of my 5th graders participating in a collaborative animation on iPads using a technique called Rotoscoping.
We documented the project and submitted it to the McGraw-Hill STEMie Award contest as a technology and art entry (adding the "a" in STEM to make it STEAM).
We learned that our project was chosen as a finalist over the summer. Online voting began in mid-August (before school began) until Sept. 15th. We worked VERY hard to get out the vote from our families and the Arlington Heights community. We had help from many online Tweeters, many friends, parents, and staff posting on Facebook, the Daily Herald wrote an article, Illinois Art Education Association added it to their e-newsletters, Mr. Robinson added it to the Splash many times, and Illinois Education Association even added to their e-newsletter.
The School board recognized our students for winning last Thursday, but only a handful attended. So it was so wonderful when our new Principal, Mrs. Sessler organized a party and invited our graduates back so we could congratulate them in person and thank them for giving Dryden the largest class gift it has ever received in its 60 year history!

4th Grade Skypes with Canada

My fourth grade students had a Skype talk with Prof. Juan Carlos Castro's pre-service art educators in Montreal, Canada studying at Concordia University. They gave a presentation on how they have used technology in art throughout their years at Dryden. Each student presented one slide and glowed in the polite applause of their audience in Canada (that was so sweet.) Then they lined up to answer questions and later ask questions. We all learned so much!

The students had written what they wanted to say for each slide and read it at the computer. What a great experience for our students. How often do you get to practice public speaking to an international audience in 4th grade? Immediately below is the transcript and below that is the slideshow.

Things We Learned about Canada

They use the metric system
Montreal's weather is like ours and their summers can get very hot too
They speak French and English. Some people speak "Fringlish"
They eat pizza (but not our great thick crust Chicago style pizza)
They don't have middle schools. Students go from primary to high school (up to grade 11). Students go to college for 2 yrs then attend University.
Elementary art is very rare. Most Canadian art teachers will teach High School art
They say "eh" a lot but didn't have strong accents
The population of all of Canada is around 35million which is less than the population of California.

What I learned from my students

They enjoy technology but not necessarily more than "hands on" art
They learn some of their tech skills in the art room first and it makes problem-solving in their classrooms and at home easier.
For example: Nicolette emailed her art to turn it in to me. Then realized she could email her classroom teacher her homework assignment when she missed school. Alya says she learned to draw on the iPad and now she does it at home and uploads it to Artsonia through the Artsonia App. Lidia says that using the interactive whiteboard in art class helped her when she was somewhere else and had to use one. Klaudia said that she used Animationish in art first then knew it already for her science class project.

iPad Workshop in Westfield, IN

I just returned from conducting an iPad workshop with the wonderful art teachers in the Westfield Washington Schools in Indiana. They have received 30 iPads for each of their art rooms and needed training ASAP to learn how to teach their students to create on iPads.
We went through some of the lessons I set up on my Creating on iPads page including:

The video above shows teachers displaying their Doink Animations. They very quickly learned to draw a creature in 4 or more stages of running and animate their drawing sequence across the stage in a composition.
Below is the (incomplete) collaborative animation made while exploring the rotoscope technique.

I am presently working on a Masters in Curriculum and Educational Technology, and yesterday was exactly what technology instruction should look like. In order for teachers to integrate more technology, we need time to "play" with the technology, create a product, come up with applications for our own curriculum, and have the opportunity to see another teacher model what that technology integration would look like in a classroom---and that is exactly what we were able to do with Tricia Fugelstad. It was also great to network with other Art teachers about their own classroom procedures, trouble shooting & student guidelines that they are using in their classrooms with ipads. I realize our district is moving toward technology instruction using podcasts and webinars to cut down on the cost of professional development in technology, but that method really only appeals to a teacher who is already pretty comfortable using technology. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity for WWS Art teachers to learn, plan, create and network with other professionals in a way that will help us design amazing work for our students in the future! -Lara

Trish's workshop was the most informative and practical workshop I have ever participated in. She is delightful and we were applying the skills she was instructing us on immediately in the workshop. To say iPads are going to change how we teach art is an understatement! For someone my age (meaning that I didn't grow up with computers) I found yesterday's workshop to be comforting. I have felt so much pressure to adopt technology into my art program. Trish gave us permission to use as much or as little as we wanted in our own classroom. I found the programs much more user friendly than I had anticipated so that made me feel so much better. I am no longer feeling so overwhelmed about the technology as I was rather, I see that I can comfortably add technology to my art program beginning this year. It was a GREAT workshop yesterday! 3. The school board recognized our rotoscope animation project winning $5000 in the McGraw-Hill STEMie Awards.
We hope to have all the 100 students (currently 6th graders) join us to celebrate with McGraw-Hill next week. I heard there was cake involved (wink).

My 4th graders in Mrs. Bernert's class are going to participate in a SKYPE show and tell and Q& A next week with pre-service art educators studying under Prof. Juan Carlos Castro at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Each student will have one slide in our show and tell slideshow of how they have used technology in art during their time at Dryden. Each slide shows something they have experienced over the years.

Today each student wrote what they wanted to share and practiced coming up to the computer to speak their part. I took this screen shot during our rehearsal. We are looking forward to sharing our art experiences with others and learning about life in Canada and what differences and similarities there may be.

Some students were understandably nervous about giving a presentation to college students. I'm sure we will all grow from this experience of trying to connect and learn from people around the world.
