The AHML sent out a photographer to Dryden's art room for their community newsletter
I’m super excited about this year’s Arlington Heights Memorial Library Art Show festivities because I am also celebrating my 25th year in the district teaching art. I was hired soon after the referendum was passed that put art teachers and art rooms in our buildings. I was fresh out of college back then and have spent my entire adult life teaching D25 kids. For the past 24 years I’ve been based at Dryden.

This year AHML is highlighting Dryden in some special ways:
1. They featured Dryden's art students in their community newsletter for May 2017
2. They are allowing me to Take OVER the AHML Instagram account in May
3. They invited me to bring in the 2nd graders' Collaborative Symmetry Lego Designs
4. They are piloting an animation display on iPads for the month using 3 animated glows
5. They will screen the Fugleflick, Don't Crush My Dreams at the reception. It's a perfect fit since it describes the feelings and dreams of artwork on display (and it's adorable!)

Cat-in-a-hat-ifying Ourselves

Posing in the Green Screen App by Do Ink to add Hats and Bows

Observational Drawing, Literacy, & Tech

Third graders are working on an observational drawing of themselves wearing a Cat-in-a-Hat Hat and bow holding their favorite Dr. Seuss book. These photos were taken using the Green Screen App by Do Ink to magically add the hat. I printed the photos to the copier so students could use it for a 1:1 size drawing. Since their drawing was the same size as the photo, they cut them out and traced the edges. I taught them some measuring and looking tricks to help them translate what they saw into a contour line drawing.

Students spent 3 class sessions working on making these observational drawings, tracing them in sharpie marker, then erasing all hints of the pencil line sketch. They were then photographed and enhanced with high contrast filters. View their gallery on Artsonia.

These drawings are considered contour line drawings since they do not include value or shading. View Drawing from Experience to hear how Grandpa Pencil explains contour line drawing to Baby Pencil (fresh from the box).

Observational drawing is a skill that will make any student more observant. It activates the mathematical side of your brain as you translate the what you see into what you draw. It requires a lot of concentration but the results can be very exciting to young artist as they start to create likeness. View Observational Drawing for a quick lesson.

Similar Project: Photo Booth Version

Picture
Picture
Picture
Before we had iPads and the Green Screen App we did a similar project using photo booth on the classroom desktop mac. I made a custom effect that put a hat and bow on each student when they came up for a still picture to the machine. We printed this and then free hand drew from our imagination what the rest of our body would look like holding a Dr. Seuss book. As you could imagine, we struggled with likenesses even more since we had less information to look at for accurate drawings. See the gallery of work.

12 5th grade  Fugleflick filmmakers used the point of view of artwork on display in the hallways to create this clever musical story mixed with green screen effects, animation, and live video called  "Don't Crush my Dreams".
Picture
Two filmmakers take a ride on a painting in the hallway using the GS app by Do Ink
This movie, which took 2 months of lunch recesses to create, began with an original song as if from the mouths of the beautiful art on display in Dryden's hallways. The students storyboarded their plan for how to turn the song into a video including many special effects using the Green Screen App by Do Ink, the Drawing and Animation App by Do Ink, Superimpose App, Keynote, Chatterpix, iFunFace, as well as Garageband to make their audio recording and iMovie to edit their final work.

This is the storyboard the filmmakers made to map out a plan for EVERY second of the movie before anything was filmed. Some changes were made as they began working, but many scenes remained as originally envisioned
Fugleflick filmmakers made this video, dedicated to all the ruined art once on display in the hallways, to help grow awareness of the need for respect so no future artwork will have their dreams crushed.

Silhouettes Resized and Layered

4/13/2017

Picture
The more I play with the Green Screen app by Do Ink, the more I think of how to use it for layering effects. This app allows you to make silhouettes through a two step process, then layer them onto a photo (or video or live camera feed) and resize it (or spin or turn it) with endless possibilities for curricular applications.

Making Silhouettes:

I've shared before how I learned on accident that you can use the Green Screen app by Do Ink to make video silhouettes. I wrote about it here in my dancing silhouette post and here in my shadow dancing post. Quickly, again, I'll share the process below.
Picture
1. Record a student in front of green screen with the chroma filter set to the RED side of the color wheel
Picture
2. Save this video of a silhouette surrounded by green.

Layering video over image:

Picture
1. Set up a new project in the green screen app and bring a photo linto the lowest (background) layer
Bring in the silhouette video to the layer above. The app will automatically remove the green. Pinch to resize and position the video where you want it.

Layer and resize any videos:

I wrote a post last year about the cool visual effects my students were inventing while making their movie about Movement. View it for details and inspiration here.

Five young animators met with me on Monday after school for one hour to learn to fly. Second grader, Sophie, won the iPad animation party prize offered through the Dryden Fundraising Raffle before spring break. She and 4 friends learned how to turn themselves into fairies that fly across the flower garden using 3 different apps on our art room iPads.

Thumbtastic Digital Collage

This anthropomorphic thumb, finger, or hand digital project will give students a chance to learn about digital collage, demonstrate an expression with their eyes, mouth, and voice, be creative, and come up with a sentence that includes a hand, thumb, or finger pun. Isn't that thumbtastic?

Steps: Digital Collage

Picture
1. Dress up your thumb, finger, or hand with Barbie or Ken doll clothes/accessories
Picture
2. Use the superimpose app to crop, clean, and add background color
Picture
Picture
3. Turn the iPad camera on yourself. Be expressive to match your character.
Picture
4. Merge the photo to the background and bring in your eyes. Use the paintbrush to erase. Click "soft brush" to blend. Adjust color to blend skin.
Picture
5. When you're done with the eyes, MERGE again. This flattens the art (so you can't go back and change the eyes again). Bring in the lips. Erase to isolate the lips then use soft brush to blend. Exaggerate the size.
Picture
6. When you're working on your thumbtastic creature, think about its voice, personality, and what it might say. Look at my list of puns to get your mind thinking.
7. Use Chatterpix app to record a sentence including a thumb, finger, or hand pun with an expressive voice. Here is mine using, "I'm all thumbs."

Whistler's Mother

James McNeill Whistler. Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (Portrait of the Artist's Mother), 1871. Musée d'Orsay, Paris. Click image to learn more.

Don't have to go to Paris to see it!

I just learned by watching a news story on our local PBS station that Whistler's Mother will be on display at the Art Institute of Chicago at the same time that I will be taking my 4th graders there for a field trip. This painting is iconic. I have put this in the category of "famous and important" ever since I was introduced to it as an art student in school. Since I've never been to Paris I had never had the opportunity to view it in person until now.  I'm so excited about having the chance to see this piece in person finally! The only draw back is that the Art Institute loaned out the American Gothic in its place. Luckily, it will return by the start of summer but that is when Whistler's Mother will head back to France.

Fun fact: Buried beneath a layer of paint and behind our lego mural wall in Dryden's hallways is a very old replica of Whistler's Mother made by young artists long ago. Perhaps one day it will be uncovered.

Parodies of Whistler's Mother

This artwork is so iconic that it has shown up in many pop culture parodies or spoofs:

Interacting with the painting

PictureClick to enlarge then save to camera roll
As a fun way to introduce and familiarize my 4th grade students with the painting, I thought I would mask out the mother and allow them to become the primary subject. I used the Procreate App on the iPad to paint over her while trying to match the colors and textures of the original painting. Using this masked image, students will be able to enter the artwork with the Green Screen App by Do Ink to make a still image or video. It would be interesting to reflect on how they change the mood and story as they compare it to the original.

Sample Questions:
  • What is the mood of the original painting?
  • What is the mood of your new image?
  • What sounds would you have heard in the original room?
  • What sounds do you imagine in the new image?
