The contest ended and unfortunately we didn't receive enough votes for the first place prize. However, all finalists receive an LCD display ($400 value). I already have hope for using it with my apple TV so I can use the computer/projector and iPad to display at the same time. Now that would be super useful! Thanks to all who helped to vote!

We need your help to win this technology makeover for LCD displays in our school. This would be a wonderful way to display all the digital art, videos, and projects we create to our school and community. Please vote once per day through your Facebook account. My First EdCamp Experience

I had a wonderful time at EdCamp Chicago on Saturday. I really loved the way you can discuss what is important for you today in an organic and collaborative way. I met a whole new crowd of educators who were passionate, smart, and very helpful as we grappled with adding creativity to our curriculum, portfolio management, maker ideas, and their implications for the art room. I tried to capture what I learned in this Storify so I can go back and view it again. Our day was organized with this google doc that has links to our resources from each session. What a treasure from the collective brain.

iPads Revealed our inner Superheroes

Our art project was inspired by this graphic for Dr. Horrible

In 2008 I saw an advertisement for Dr. Horrible (see above, right) and thought it would be so cool to create an image similar to this but use it for good, not evil. I designed a paper collage lesson and tried it with second graders. Then the following year I thought it would be fun to do this digitally. Back then (before iPads) I didn't have a simple way for students to create graphic designs. I did much of the work behind the scenes. It was about 5 minutes of work per student to create these silhouette superheroes. (What was I thinking?) Now that we have iPads everything is different. Every second grader was able to do every step of this project in one simple app.Yeah! We can learn so much more now and show the world our inner superheroes!

Not everything that matters is measurable

What have you learned in your time at school that isn't reflected in a test? Did you learn to share your art supplies, take a moment to compliment a classmate, let a friend go first, help a lost kindergartner find their classroom?
What talents do you have that were not tested? Are you a gymnast, a dancer, a basketball player, a swimmer, a musician, a filmmaker, a puzzle worker?
What have you learned about your role in the community? Do you volunteer, do you pick up litter, do you protect animals, do you conserve resources?What about you has grown that a test can't measure? Your artistic abilities, your confidence, your self-esteem, your humor, your courage, your kindness?

All of you matters…and some of the best parts of you are unmeasurable. Here are some examples of wonderful successes that were not measured on a test that I witnessed.

First grade service project to raise money for storm victims

Students made a video to help others be safe online

The filmmakers voted to donate prize to art room for an iPad

The learning that happens in an art room matters. Look at these spontaneous moments captured through vine video showing creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving all of which are valued in society and the workplace. The art room is a learning lab for life skills yet it should not all be measured with data. It needs to be experienced with joy!

If we can't measure it in school do we still value it? What we prioritize for children communicates value to them. If we take away the unmeasurable things in their education we are depriving them of the beauty, color, richness of life like removing all the illustrations from a book. Speaking of illustrations, view this award-winning video created by my student filmmakers and see why arts education is so vital to children.

Third graders working on their Anti-Litterbugs, a STEAM lesson
