Dryden Students Quoted in TEDx Talk

Three years ago Dryden 1st graders learned about a school in New Jersey near the coast that was flooded by Super Storm Sandy. Their art room was in the basement which filled from floor to ceiling with muddy water destroying everything they had.

So, they decided to make art to raise money for them. We made and sold little heart houses as ornament, pins, and magnets and raised over $1200.

Rushton Hurley, world speaker and education specialist, spoke at a TEDx event and quoted our 1st graders (now 4th graders) as inspiration for his audience.

It's amazing how a seed of kindness from such young students can grow and spread.

New Reason to Celebrate,We're Finalists

We just learned that our Heart House Art Service Project video was chosen as a finalist in the NEXT VISTA.org Service via Video Student Contest.

Buy a T-shirt with your child's heart house to help celebrate and raise money for the two iPads the art room still needs.

Our 1st graders, brownies, girl scouts and 5th graders with the help of parent volunteers made heart houses to raise over $1275 to help St. Rose High School in Belmar, New Jersey after their school's art program, located in their basement, was devastated by Super Storm Sandy.

The three videos chosen as finalists will be watched by judges from around the world in April, and the winner will be announced at the Next Vista Awards Night on April 26th. Each finalist will receive a certificate, as well as a $100 donation to the cause identified when the video was submitted.

Our Heart Houses Raised $1275

At the end of 2012, my 1st graders lead an Art Service Project that later Girl Scouts and Brownies joined in on called Heart Houses. These little houses made from matte board were sold as pins, magnets, and ornaments for $5 each to help raise money for Super Storm Sandy Victims. Their total sales raised $1275. The first graders chose to give their money to a school called St. Rose High School in Belmar, New Jersey (very near the shore) where the art program was devastated by the storm since it was located in the basement. Here are some photos from the aftermath provided by their art teacher Linda Devlin. We gave St. Rose a Blick Art Gift certificate for $500 and sent checks totally $775 to help restore their art program.

The idea to create Heart Houses was inspired by my online community of art teachers. This is where I also learned about the destruction of Linda Devlin's art room.

Creating Snow and Spreading Cheer!

Here is a quick video of students creating digital snowflakes using the MY FLAKE iPhone app on the iPads. They are learning to take screenshots, crop, and email as well.
Learn about the whole lesson from my previous post.
We are printing our snowflakes and sharing them with a school far away that can use some cheering up. Students were told that their printed flakes were going to be a gift for others but they can always view the one they made on our online gallery here.

Dryden students are invited to show that others matter by making art and selling it to raise money for the victims of Super Storm Sandy. We are joining a collaboration of artists and art teachers doing the same or similar projects to make a difference including Heart Houses and Shells for NJ Shores.

My first graders are using their art time for the next couple of weeks to create these Heart Houses which will be turned into pins, magnets, or ornaments. They are hoping to find willing buyers at $5.00 each.

If you want to join in I made simple directions below. Thank you to my art volunteers who spent hours cutting matte board scraps for this project.
