When Students become Colleagues

Two of my former students grew up, became teachers, and are now colleagues at Dryden. Miss Dietrich now teaches 5th grade. She was with me to make a spoof of the American Gothic in 3rd grade and a clay bear in 4th grade as well as many other pieces.

We found these two pieces on our Art History Tile Wall. The American Gothic was credited to her on the wall, but the clay bear was anonymous. I had used donations to fill in some gaps in our history with pieces that were from my files. I had a clay bear photo but didn't remember who the artist was. Now we do! Miss Dietrich agreed to bring in hers from home (sitting on her dresser all these years) for a video surprise (see below).

Miss Angelico is now teaching 1st grade. I taught her for all her years at Dryden. I went through my files (I'm a digital hoarder) and found this sweet image. Here is Miss Angelico when she was a 1st grader sitting at the same table that her 1st grade students will sit at to make art this year. I love the concentration as she paints the table cloth of her apple still life. Love everything about this photo from the cute handwriting in the bottom corner to the smudge of orange paint on her cheek. What a cool thing for me to see my little student all grown up with her own little students. How cool for the new batch of 1st graders to see their grown up teacher as a little girl just like them ?.

USING CLOSE READING STRATEGIES

I've been planning this day for a long time. Today's third grade art class included a reading and math lesson surrounding our collaborative art walls. I had written an article for School Arts Magazine about our LEGO wall and wanted the kids to read it. When I mentioned this, my Assist. Principal suggested we use close reading strategies. So we tried a few. Before we began I had students predict who my audience was for the article by thumbing through the magazine. Then, students read the first part of the text silently. Afterwards we wrote the words on the board that they didn't know. We went back and read the word in context and tried to guess the meaning together. This exercise allowed me to reinforce our art concepts and our collaborative project while helping students practice reading skills (...and bonus, it made me feel good that I had written above a 3rd grade level.)

FINDING COORDINATES

The next activity was math and art related. We wrote a random coordinate on a slip of paper with a few parameters. The first number was between 1-32 separated by a ":" followed by a second number between 1-16. Then we took our mat and sat outside our Artsonia Tile Wall. I had numbered all the rows so that each tile became a coordinate. They took turns finding the tile that matched their coordinate and tried to label the art they found as a landscape, still life, portrait, figure drawing, collage, etc. They were very good at finding coordinates because, as they all exclaimed happily, "We did this in math!"
Since I know they understand coordinates, I think I can expand this activity into something more engaging like an I Spy game where students use art vocabulary and coordinates to get each other to look closely at the art.

Dryden's Unidentified Historic Tiles

Dryden's Art History Tile Wall has 192 pieces of art taken from my digital archives to complete the 512 piece wall. Many of the art pieces I used (paid for by a gift from Artsonia, our online digital art gallery) were not identified. Maybe you will see your art or your friends' as you look through this commemorative shutterfly book. The actual book will be on display in the art room.
