My students finished making their construction paper translational tessellations you can view them in our online art gallery on Artsonia here.
Unfortunately we have to make our digital tessellations collaboratively since we only have half the iPads needed for our classroom. Help solve this problem with a donation to our iPad campaign through Donors Choose or Edbacker.com. My students and I thank you very much! We love creating on iPads!

Landscape in Sketchbook Express

After listening to the google hangout via Edreach about integrating iPads in the arts. I started thinking about how art teachers can teach the same concepts they have always taught their students using iPads. We don't have to through out all of our thinking about art production and instruction. However, if we can harness the extra benefits of creating on iPads, we can enhance our student's learning and give them opportunities for art creation they haven't had before. In this project above, I would be teaching my young artists about the following concepts and art terms:

Landscape
Horizon Line
Overlap
Primary colors
Secondary Colors
Shapes
Visual Texture

The additional things we would learn from making this project on the iPad is how to

use layers as we create to manage overlapping
use layer to isolate visual texture to minimize mistakes
make lines into shapes to successfully fill color areas
zoom in to be more detailed

Teach students the forgiving benefits of using layers to create art. In this project students:

can erase on one layer without effecting the others
can draw with overlapping without having to erase

Keith Haring Figures with the Wooden Doll 3D App

Keith Haring, a street artist of the 1980's created bright, simple, and playful dancing figures that inspire my students. We have created Haring inspired pieces in the past focusing on figure, color, and pattern.
The most difficult part of the lesson is creating the figures with arms and legs that bend in places they should bend. It sounds easy but when you're still new a figure drawing, it is very challenging. I've tried having students pose their own bodies, photograph poses and draw over them on the interactive whiteboard, and cut out paper people that they can pose and trace. All these methods have helped, but I just stumbled on one that may be transformational when I found the Wooden Doll 3D app for the iPad.
Below: These are examples from second graders who have hand-drawn after great struggles the four action poses. They completed these with complementary colors pairs in the negative and positive spaces then completed them with line and shape pattern.

Custom Photo Booth FX Tutorial

One of the ways I love to engage my students with technology while adding a fun extension the art project is through custom photo booth effects. I have taught myself to make custom effects from any image so that my students can enter and give a voice to famous artwork. I have shared these ideas at technology and art conferences and have been asked to share how I do this.

I create the tutorial below showing how to make custom photo booth effects. You need to have the following software on your MAC. Quartz Composer comes with the computer. If you are working on the school computer, they might not have installed it thinking you wouldn't use it. How silly. Set them straight (nicely ) and ask them to load it for you.

If you look in your compositions folder and find nothing to start with for a template feel free to download my SCREAM.qtz file here. Add it to your compositions folder and then copy it for your next design. Please share what you make too so more children can enjoy.
Below is an example of how a custom photo booth effect was used to help create the artwork. We Cat-in-a-hatified ourselves and used the image to help us draw the Cat-in -a-hat themed art. We finished it just in time for Read Across America and Dr. Seuss' B-day.

Creating on iPads ~ handouts

I created a page on my website dedicated to helping teachers get started with creating on iPads. It has links to resources, files, videos, tutorials, and art galleries to help you through the process. I added some handouts today with a bit more detail to help things along. Download the pdf here.

I recommend starting with this icebreaker activity to help you explore the painting tools, get a feel for the stylus, and trouble shoot Brushes app until it is doing what you want it to do.

This activity uses the Brushes app. This is a nice project to help create a collaborative piece of art while learning digital tools and refreshing your figure drawing skills. You will need my template to get started.

You will need a couple of my files and the Brushes app again for this technique. I also have a video that will help you see what this looks like in the classroom.
This technique can be used for any sketching activity when students need to look closely.

This graphic design technique is so easy that you'll start to wonder if anyone would pull out the laptops and try to layer in photoshop with elementary students ever again.View the video of students working. Grab hat. Grab a sample of healthy choices.

This project was a grand slam with my fifth graders. This technique is spelled out in this post. I put together a sample set of images to practice with taken from a 4 second video with at 12 fps rate. So give it a try.
