Movie Trivia: One of the scenes is a tribute to a famous artist for his optical illusions. Name the artist. View the actresses "Behind the Scenes" below.
I've been reminding Dryden Artists about the Blah Blah Oops! in the art room for years. This is when we are so busy talking that we make a mistake in our work. This can happen anywhere, anytime. So let this song and dance from Lily, Kylie, and Rachel help you remember that Good Work Takes All Your Thinking!
View all four events in one short animoto video below orat this link.
TWO Dryden Artists have their art featured on the Youth Art Month Poster for the state of Illinois. These posters are distributed to every school building and legislator in the state to celebrate Art Education. We are so proud of our two winners! They were recognized at the school board meeting on March 14th.

A group of 5 students worked on a Fugleflick movie over a period of 5 months that uses art as a metaphor for embracing diversity, Different is Good. This movie was debuted to a large audience as the Cultural Arts Fair and introduced by the filmmakers themselves. Congrats to Isabelle, Marion, Ciara, Ryan, and Brianna (not shown). View the movie and take the quiz here on my previous blog post.
The District's Cultural Arts Fair was held on March 7th. I was not able to attend because I was at the NAEA conference in Texas, but Mrs. Beihoffer (thank you!) volunteered to hang our art banners and photograph the Dryden Artists who stopped by. Congratulations to those with art selected for this exhibit. The beautiful work is worth celebrating! See more photos below.
Four Dryden Artists had artwork chosen for permanent display at the new St. Alexius Children's and Women's Hospital in Hoffman Estates. The organizers wanted local student art and selected Dryden pieces from last year's Artsonia Gallery. The families brought the original pieces in to be scanned and judged by a committee. The ones selected were blown enlarge and professionally displayed in the hallways and/or in the patient's rooms. How wonderful that our wish for the world project inspired by Robert Indiana's LOVE image will be spreading a message of kindness to the future patients of this hospital. Jack's art was a watercolor of fall leaves. See more images from the VIP artist's reception at the hospital on Friday, March 15th below.
I just returned from a wonderfully energizing conference experience with thousands of art educators from around the country meeting for 4 days in Fort Worth, Texas. I loved the time I had with my Personal Learning Network (PLN) face to face. These are the people I learn from all year-round online through our social networks. All SIX of my presentations were with people I connect with online, three of which I had never met in person before! We decided ahead of time to buy this shirt from Inkpixie using our Twitter Handle and wear them as we gathered on Saturday for coffee. We posed together for this picture. (Our hands look funny because we are trying to imitate this picture that Stacy Lord made when she was being silly on a snow day.) Six Presentations:Technology Tools in Elementary Art Theresa McGee, an elementary art teacher in Hinsdale, IL, and I traveled together to Texas. We rushed over to the conference as soon as we arrived 15 minutes before our first presentation where we took turns with two other art teachers including Jessica Balsley demonstrating how we use technology. I quickly demonstrated this iPad art lesson called, It's Not Christina's World Anymore, based on the painting, Christina's World. See the finished student art here. Connected Art Educators: PLNs Dr. Craig Roland, Prof. of Art Ed at Uof Fl, Dr. Elizabeth Delacruz (my former professor from U of I), Ian Sands, H.S. art teacher from Apex, NC, and I each took turns sharing how our online personal learning network has made a difference for our professional growth and has benefitted our students. I talked about three stories: Careers in Art, Doink Alien Animations, and IPEVO. It's too much to explain here, but trust me, they're great stories! Western Region/Southeastern Region Elementary Art Teacher Showcase This presentation was part of winning the Western Region Elementary Art Teacher of the Year Award. I tried to sum up everything we do in 20 minutes. I used this video to preface the presentation and followed with a focus on how we use technology in our art room. I explain it better in this online presentation. The other presenter was Jennifer Johnson Keith of Louisiana who shared about her wonderful program in 20 minutes as well. It is hard to condense a career full of stories into 20 mins. Artsonia-Online Digital Art Gallery This is the 5th year I've been able to present on using Artsonia as a tool to create a digital portfolio with my students. Our presentation has grown and evolved over the years as the company has improved and changed to make their service better and better for art teachers and their students. The CEO and President of the company joined Susan, Theresa, and I to help answer questions from the attendees and hear their concerns and questions about the process of getting started. Learn more here. iPads in Art (Part Two) This session was a continuation of the session that Suzanne Tiedemann and I (Theresa Gillespie was with us in spirit) did last year to a standing room only group. We thought that since the room was so small we should offer it again so those who really wanted to learn about creating art on iPads can get a chance. Luckily they gave us a larger room where all 150 or so attendees could each find a seat. This year Theresa Gillespie joined me (Suzanne was with us in spirit) as we presented about the top three projects we successfully accomplished with our students. You can learn more from my page, Theresa's page, and this page made jointly by Suzanne and me. Lights, Camera, Learning! with Fugleflicks and Campbellartsoup I was so excited to share about making movies to teach art concepts with Janine Campbell. We had been learning from each other for years online and finally met as we shared our different approaches to student created art related movie making. Learn more about Janine's program here. View our Fugleflicks index here. Receiving my AwardOn March 7th I received the Western Region Elementary Art Teacher of the Year 2013 Award from the National Art Education Association. My nominator was Samantha Melvin of Texas who was the National Elementary Art Teacher of the Year in 2012. It is such an honor to be recognized at this level for doing the job that I love. Thank you PLN for making me a better teacher! Read this story about the THREE Illinois Art Educators recognized at the National Art Education Conference. MY take on this trip When I saw this photo taken by Jennifer at the showcase presentation that we shared, I had a WOW moment as I looked at a relaxed and confident person happily talking to a large crowd of people at a national conference. You may not know my journey, but here is a hint: I was so painfully shy growing up and into my adult years that I had to come home from college after two weeks because I was too afraid to go into the cafeteria for my meals. Thank you to all the people over the years who gently held my hand and helped me grow.
Congratulations to Klaudia (4th grade) for winning the program cover design contest. (See all entries) Her artwork (shown to the left) will represent Dryden on the cover of the program handed out the night of the Cultural Arts Festival on Friday, March 8th at Thomas Middle School beginning at 6pm (free admission). Dryden will also show two banners full of student art (certificates will be sent home with the selected student artists on Feb.22nd. See the banners below show the art chosen for display). That night will also be the big screen debut of the new Fugleflick, Different is Good and a chance to see our all school Common Core Crazy video which debuted at the District Variety Show once again. P. S. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the cultural arts festival event on March 8th. Mrs. Beihoffer has volunteered to stand in my place. Thank you! I will be at the National Art Education Conference in Texas to accept my award for Western Region Elementary Art Teacher of the Year. This is the first year I'm missing the event, so please stop by and pose for your photo with Mrs. Beihoffer so I can have some great pictures of what I missed and celebrate with you:)
Fugleflick filmmakers have been working since October on a video that promotes diversity metaphorically using art. Our original song drove the imagery and our understanding of surrealism from last year's work with Rene Magritte inspired much of what you'll see. Students used animation tools in Keynote and green screen effects in iMovie to create this dream-like movie. See if you can identify the 15 pieces of famous art shown throughout the movie. Please give our young filmmakers feedback in the comments area below. Thanks for watching, Different is Good.

Quiz your students by asking them to identify the famous art pieces as seen in the movie.
Click on each image to enlarge them. Then, use this answer sheet to see how you did. Our 3rd grade Matisse Inspired wallpaper still life collages are full of beautiful textures, patterns, and colors. They really are irresistible! See all of these environmentally friendly pieces displayed in the hallways. We must thank Ms. Murphy who donated the wallpaper sample books, all the art volunteers who cut out the paper from the books, and those who have been busy this week hanging artwork in the hallways! Thank you! You can also explore the images from anywhere in the world on our online art gallery on Artsonia. Please take a moment to write a kind comment to an artist. They will love it! P.S. The art teacher in me compels me to plea on behalf of the artwork to always show respect for the art in the hallway. Touching is tempting, but it is really easy to damage someone's art. So enjoy it with your eyes. This Fugleflick below is a good reminder to not crush the art's dream of one day making it off the hallway walls and into a frame in the family's home. Don't Crush my Dreams from Tricia Fuglestad on Vimeo. These paintings by 5th graders combined art skills, concepts, and US history. View the rest of our 5th grade Mayflower Seascapes in our gallery on Artsonia.
We practiced our Observational Drawing Skills (see this fugleflick above at the left) to draw the Mayflower ship. We learned about the voyage of the pilgrims through videos from Brainpop and Espresso Education. Then we painted our seascape with both transparent paints for the sky/water, and opaque paint for the ship (see the fugleflick video above on the right to see who would win in a battle between Opaque Man and Transparent Man). Today our Fugleflick Filmmakers had the honor of seeing their student-created, art-related video, Elementary Musical, screen to an international audience at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival. Our students (currently 6th graders) were invited on stage afterwards to talk about their movie making experience. Dryden's Art Program has been making award-winning Fugleflicks with volunteer filmmakers for six years now. This movie is now our 5th Fugleflick that has screened at the Chicago International Children's Film Festival. Have a Fugleflick film fest below. In 2007 Young Sloppy Brush was screened at CICFF. This brush then was asked to screen in Italy and Australia the following year. In 2009 it traveled around the country to art rooms in the Brush with Fame tour. He went missing before the end of his trip. Visit his website to see pictures, his video and his MIA video to learn more. We miss him:( In 2009 Let's Be Green when we Clean screen at the CICFF. This video teaches students to conserve, recycle, and be smarter about cleaning the art room. It was a national finalist in the National Geographic Find Your Footprint Student Video Contest. See the framed T-Shirt in the hallway outside the art room. This video is full of special FX. In 2009 Complementary in Every Way screened at the CICFF. This love story between Red and Green very cleverly teaches the primary, secondary colors, color mixing, and introduces many related concepts. This story grew from a silly conversation in a 4th grade class. They sketched out the story while a group of 5th graders played the roles. In 2010 Glue Blues screened at the CICFF. This musical video told the plight of misused & mistreated bottles of glue from their own perspective. The 5 filmmakers had very creative storytelling strategies as they sang, danced, and spoke of how to help cure the Glue Blues. This movie was featured in a Wonderopolis post about how glue works. In 2012 Elementary Musical screened at the CICFF. This musical introduction to the Elements of Art has won a number of accolades since it was created in early 2012. It won the Arlington Heights School District's Youtube Festival, Best of Show for the Screen Test Team Fest, and tied for first place NextVista.org's student video contest. |
