Here is an idea for an appsmash that introduces first graders to:
Step 4. Combine the LOVE template and the emoji filled heart picture in the Superimpose app using the square size constraints, masking, and blend mode. Watch my tutorial to see how it is done.
I have done a presentation called Creative Digital Projects that turn Stem to STEAM at three conferences over the past couple of years. These 45-50 minute presentations include a bizillion ideas in a media packed keynote file that I have trouble sharing online. However I did create a condensed version of the presentation for the AOE Online Conference last summer. The presentation has been behind a pay wall for one year and can finally come out for public consumption now. The following lessons are shared in the video below. Learn more from my links. Also, see Wes Fryer's review of my live presentation at the Illinois Computer Educator's Conference here.
I was honored with the opportunity to work with the art team in Villa Park, IL on Friday. We went through a dozen or so art education based projects on the iPads together. You can explore the lessons we explored on your own using this handout. Open it in iBooks and use the links to download templates or view blog posts with more information.
I have THRILLING news for many Dryden Students today! I was interviewed by Alyson Stamos of Natural Child World Magazine about Dryden's Art Program towards the end of the school year thanks to the recommendation of Jack Tovey, art instructor/digital media specialist and Amanda Armstrong, Program Coordinator for Erikson Institute's TEC Center.
The article talks about how our students use digital media and devices to create art, shows six of my second grader's digital abstract cats in the style of Laurel Birch, and four of our fourth grader's Wish for the World images.

Our third graders just finished their monochromatic self-portraits in 3/4 poses. As an extension to this project I asked them to create a 6 word poem about themselves. These became their artist statements on Artsonia and the words they would use along with the Wordfoto app to create a new digital piece of art. They turned out beautiful!
See wordfoto gallery on Artsonia and some examples below.

Sharing images with students for iPad projects can be tricky. I don't want to spend my whole class period teaching students to login to my dropbox, fish through my folders, and risk accidentally deleting or moving something important to find the image they need. So I found a new way to quickly share out images using the dropbox WITHOUT students logging in. It gives me all the flexibility of sharing out images on the fly without and risks. View my tutorial below to see how it works. Don't have Dropbox? Click here.
20 pieces were selected to represent Dryden's Art Program for the 2011-2012 school year. I entered these (see gallery) for consideration into the Illinois Art Education Student Show Exhibit. Only 40 pieces from the entire state are chosen for this year long traveling exhibit. Congratulations to all 20 finalists for creating such amazing pieces!
The judges chose one Dryden piece for the traveling exhibit...
Congratulations to Kenzie for her Wish for the World in Wordfoto piece, "Play".
Learn more about how she made this piece of art from an earlier post.
She will be honored at the awards ceremony in Lisle, IL in November as her piece joins 39 others to travel the state!
See this video from last year's winner, Kristelle, to understand how truly special this art show is for children.
Third graders were challenged to create a four letter wish for the world in the style of Robert Indiana's LOVE image. Then, they composed a short statement explaining their choice. The art and the text were combined using an iPhone/iPad app called Wordfoto. This app puts the words into the image in an artistic way. Take a close look at these wishes below and you can not only see their four letter wish, but also read within it their reasons why they chose this word and it's meaning to them. Please compliment these artists on our online gallery on Artsonia. Find their work:
