The Man of Steel film is full of life lessons in the battle between good and evil, choices, and hope for a better world. One thing that struck me as an art teacher was that the symbol that appears on "Superman's" outfit is not really an "S" as we mere humans would assume, but rather the Kryptonian symbol for hope. This made me ponder an art lesson that asks students, "What superhero powers do you have to make the world a better place and what would your symbol be?". See brainstorm handout below.
I made this worksheet to help student sketch out an idea for their symbol and design their slogan that echoed the style of "The Man of Steel" with his symbol of hope.
I also created this PNG version of just the emblem outline so students can create the artwork on the iPad using Sketchbook Express or the Brushes app. I decided to make the emblem symmetrical so I used the symmetry button in Sketchbook Express and only drew half the design (bonus!). I thought about extending the lesson by having students pose as a superhero (I need to buy a cape) and digitally layer the emblem over them. I made these examples in Sketchbook express using students who were posing for another project earlier in the year. I think the cape and a box fan for the breezy effect will give the final pieces just the right look.
