I've been putting quotes from the Wishtree on my light up mini marquee in the art room. One of my favorite quotes is, "Stand tall, Dig Deep." The 2nd graders and I made a movement to go with it. Since there are "v"s in the branches of trees we make our hands into Vs (looks like the peace sign) then reach up and say, "STAND TALL", then, with the same Vs on our hands we point to our roots, "DIG DEEP." We think this means to stand up for what we believe in and try our best. | Dryden is participating in #1Book1Dryden by reading The Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. Since the book tells a story of a tree that people make wishes on, I thought we would use our TREE SILHOUETTE project to recreate our own tree then digitally join the tree to make a wish. Originally these trees were based on the story, The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. See my post for the book and song we used to inspire the students. |
Exploring Math and the Arts with Trees: View Finished Tree Silhouettes in Artsonia Gallery
Students are reading The Wishtree in their classrooms, but I read The Giving Tree to them in the art room via my video.
MUSIC: My friend, Suzanne Tiedemann, an art teacher in New Jersey, has a beautiful singing voice. One day she played her guitar and sang (with her own voice harmonizing) the chorus of the song, The Giving Tree. We love the song and sang it so many times as we drew that we did a sing along at the end of class. Take a peek below. |
