Have you ever loved an art concept so much that you want to sing about it?
That happens here all the time. We love to make musical Fugleflicks that teach us about art. Here is one of our favorites: MONOCHROMATIC just in time for our third grade monochromatic self-portrait painting.

We started painting today with a randomly selected (pulled from a hat) monochromatic palette. Each palette included:

Base color (straight from the bottle)
Tints (Base plus white)
Shades (Base plus black)
Neutrals (Base plus black plus white)

The drawings for our monochromatic portraits were SO IMPRESSIVE that I scanned them all and uploaded them to Artsonia.

I agree, these portraits are very impressive! Especially for 3rd grade. Were they looking in the mirror at themselves, a photo, or were you walking them through the steps of how to draw a portrait? Excellent work!

Thank you! All of the above. They had mirrors to look at their features as I drew my suggestion for how to, where to, and how big to draw each feature.

Hi there I looked for the 3/4 pose self portrait lesson plan on teachers pay teachers and it was not there any suggestions? i'd love to do this project with my class.

Making it monochromatic is a variation for this project.

Hello, these are great. What kind of paint did you use and what did you use for the black outline?

We use versatemp tempra paints and redimark chisel tip permanent black markers.

Did students create their own tints and shades or where they prepared for them. I was looking for a project for my 5th grade kids with mixing tints and shades and I love how graphic this appears.

If you look at the post there is a photo of the paints in containers. I squirted the paints in the cups and had them do the mixing/adjusting as needed. It saved time and gave everyone enough paint to work with without having to remix and try to match half way through.

What a wonderful solution - having the colors pre-squirted into cups for the students to see the ratio, but still have them mix and adjust as needed. A great time saver, but also confidence builder. Thank you for sharing!
