Drawing a nesting doll design
 My nesting doll template | This digital art lesson has both a drawing and animation component. The nesting doll design (see this handout) works perfectly for learning about size, duplication, and overlapping while only drawing one doll. As I was playing with the Do Ink drawing app to draw my nesting doll design I decided that the trickiest part of the design is getting a symmetrical nesting doll shape so I made a template for the students to start with. It's easier to use the original .doink file to import into the app. |

The nesting doll still image is great for demonstrating overlapping, duplicating, and reducing sizes.
Animating the nesting doll
In order to animate the nesting doll I needed to have the image saved on my camera roll of the iPad as a PNG with a transparent background. The Do Ink animation app gives you the option to save the image this way.

I used the Superimpose app to make a top and bottom image of the nesting doll so I could animate it. I used the mask tab and square tool to select and delete the bottom half then save it with "mask as png". Then I hit the "undo" button to restore the image and select and delete the top half and save it the same way.

I used the keyframe button (diamond) to set up the animation to reveal a smaller nesting doll
The looping animation implies that there is a smaller nesting doll inside each doll
