Putting AR in ARt: Augmented Reality

I've spent months playing with augmented reality in preparation for bringing into my classroom. My 5th graders were my first students to go through the steps I had envisioned of making art, making the art move through animation, then witnessing the art come alive with augmented reality as they scan the art and see the animation.

Let's think about the possibilities

I began looking around and thinking about the art that I have already created to see if I could make it come alive with animation and augmented reality. As I laid down my glass on the coaster I saw Matilda (my mascot). She was originally drawn on the iPad in the Brushes Redux app-the same app I use for this simple animation technique. So I found her original file and brought it back into Brushes to begin a simple 4 frame animation. I made the four frames into a gif and video using ezgif.com website.

After making the animation opened up HP Reveal studio and I uploaded the two elements needed:

1. The original image (trigger)
2. The animation (overlay)

In order to create the illusion that Matilda comes to life, the overlay needs to fit the trigger (which is an option under the "resize" button). I shared the effect publically. This means anyone using the HP Reveal app following my account, "Fuglefunart" can scan Matilda and see her come to life. Try it with this image from your computer screen.

So, Matilda was already printed out as a coaster (actually a tile that I use as a coaster) via ouronline art gallery on Artsonia. Artsonia has a gift store full of products that could feature her. She could be on a T-Shirt, Mug, tote bag, bookmark, keychain, etc. Which ever item Matilda appears on, if her colors and cropping match the original trigger, will come to life with augmented reality using HP Reveal app.

So, I went overboard and set up augmented reality everywhere...

So my home is becoming an augmented reality funhouse.

AR with Do Ink Animation App

I began experimenting with other ways of animating as I played with augmented reality. This coaster has my students' running aliens crossing behind a drawing of my husband. 
I isolated the figure in the digital version of the art so that I could layer the animation behind it using the Do Ink animation app.

So, I went to @hpreveal studio and set up the #AugmentedReality effect so that when you use the #hpreveal app following “fuglefunart” you can see this effect:

My Robot Mug Smiles Back

View this robot transdigital lesson to find out how 5th graders made their robot paintings move with animation triggered with augmented reality. I had one of my robot examples printed via Artsonia to a mug.

In this augmented reality effect, I wanted to make one of my painting self-destruct in honor of Banksy' self-shredding painting. I put the image in Keynote and applied the shatter animation effect. Then, I made a green screen video of myself swinging a mallet. I combined the two along with some glass breaking sound effects. I used ezgif.com to trim the video to the exact size of my art to make the effect as seamless as possible.

Speaking Through my Art

I think this idea will be more accessible to non-art teachers. In this augmented reality effect, I spoke through my art using the Green Screen App by Do Ink. I erased my face, and isolated my glasses then inserted my actual face as a video with the glasses over top.

After I recorded the @DoInkTweets vid, I used @hpreveal & set original art as the trigger & vid (trimmed to match the art) as the overlay. The #augmentedreality effect looks like this:
