5th graders learned how to draw a city scene with one-point perspective. This meant that they created a vanishing point with converging lines. They learned to use their ruler to draw every line towards the vanishing point for the side of the buildings facing the street. We spent a long time exploring this concept, drawing, revising, and enhancing our work.

Google Street View
We used our class set of iPads to explore perspective using google street view. I set up a QR code for students to scan. Students were asked to find a view of Michigan Ave in Chicago where they could clearly see a vanishing point. They took a screenshot and used markup to trace the converging lines that head to the vanishing point.

I used the document camera to lead students through three buildings so they could learn how to draw a building on the left, right, overlapped, above the horizon line and below. Then students took it from there until I later demonstrated windows, street lights, and a median in the middle of the road.

We spent so much time trying to learn the tricks of perspective drawing that we decided not to cover up our hard work with paint. So, we planned on leaving it as a black and white line drawing until I attended the National Art Conference and found a teacher, Cate Nasser who was presenting on "Art in the Dark." I used our Artist of the Week prize to purchase UV paint and black light flashlights for this project. You can't see it since it goes on clear but take a look at what happens.

Digital Extension: Flying over the City
Students posed for green screen photos that they transformed digitally using two apps. They cleaned the green and saved the photo as a png using the superimpose app. Then, they drew over and under their photo in the Brushes Redux app to become a superhero or a sprite that would later fly over their city.
