Vintage Illustrations/Augmented Reality

I learned from Paul Hamilton on Twitter about an augmented reality app that I plan on using to replace HP Reveal called EyeJack app. It has a creator app for the mac desktop and an app for your device. You set up a trigger, overlay, and option audio in the creator then scan the QR code it generates to load the effect (the first time). Over the past few years I've been making animations based on vintage illustrations. These have been shared out in my twitter feed and during my conference presentations and partially collectedin this blog post. It never occurred to me to share them through augmented reality until a Shutterfly coupon (if you want a referral code for a free 8 x 8 photo book contact me) arrived in the mail. So I went through my files and set up the augmented reality for 20+ animations and designed and purchased a book. This tweet is a screen recording of the preview of the book. Each page of the book is one animation that I created. Some took FOREEEVVVERRR to make as I explored different techniques and tried to challenge myself to think differently. I focused on using vintage illustrations since I knew that I would be redrawing for certain effects. I wouldn't be able to redraw over a photo (convincingly). I did a couple old advertisements, movie posters, and lots of sewing patterns.

Ultimately, I made this book for a creativity challenge for my students to help them think about storytelling, build visual literacy skills, and stretch their minds in new ways before we begin a creative animation lesson.

Update: My Book Arrived!

My Shutterfly book arrived. Here is what it looks like when I tested it. The augmented reality effects are super responsive and fast. I love it! The only thing I have to do is print my QR code for the cover and tape it to the inside. I did that step after I set it to the printers.
