Do you remember (older people) the Silhouette Blends from Electric Company? Two people framed the screen with their silhouetted profiles contributing parts of words to make one word together. The sounds they formed came on the screen as if from their lips. It was a fascinating way to hear and see words form. Here are some examples below.
Fifth Grade Fugleflick Filmmakers spent 2 months creating a story to an original song to encourage everyone to shift their thinking from can't to can. Change that little voice in your head from fixed thinking to a growth mindset and TRY YOUR BEST!
Special FXs Explained:
This movie is full of special effects made with drawn animation and/or green screen. Students used relative size to become the small voice in your head saying positive things to encourage you to TRY YOUR BEST. Here are some of the FX students used.
This little sprite popped onto the TV screen to encourage a student making art. He first had to be layered onto a screenshot of an iPad. Then the artist had to be filmed looking at a TV with the color green on it's screen. The two were layered in the GS app by Do Ink.
Some of the effects students used in this movie have been done before in previous Fugleflicks or projects. The thought bubble trick is explained in this post.
This effect is a straight forward use of relative size to make the sprites look very small. See this post about relative size for a tutorial and more ideas for using this trick.
I'm so excited to see the silhouette special FX in this Fugleflick. This idea has its own post explaining how we found this trick on accident and some of the amazing ideas you can use it for.
For one scene, a student is drawing and gets frustrated. She slams down her marker and gives up. As the art heads to the garbage can, the portrait on it speaks out to its artist begging for her to not give up. This special FX was create after a series of steps as show in the video. The animation was created through rotoscope. See this post to learn more.
This effect where a student spins into a painting with a quick size change was so amazing that it received it's own blog post here.
To make these little sprites fly, we had them pose in the last moment of their video. Then we used a still image of the last frame of the video and made them fly using the keynote app. To enhance the magic, we used a pixie title effect without words (just typed a space) to create a trail of sprite dust as they fly off the screen.

Students wanted to tell the story of a fixed mindset changing to a growth mindset with the encouragement of positive little voices to combat the negative little voices you hear in your own head. Many students need this message so the filmmakers tried to get in their shoes (and heads) to help others Try their Best.
Since this video fits the theme "In Another's Shoes" we trimmed it down to 2 minutes so it could qualify for the first annual Global Student Voice Film Festival. To take a 3 min 40 sec song down to 2 minutes wasn't easy. The best way was to trim each chorus and remove the bridge. We were allowed another 1 minute of credits. I think it still tells the story just as well though some awesome scenes were removed in this version.
Public Screenings of Try Your Best
Our Fugleflick Filmmakers' movie, Try Your Best was accepted into the 2018 Screen Test Film Fest Jr. Of the 5 movies screening, ours was the only one local. The other films were from Texas, Arizona, Canada, and Sweden. The hand drawn animation from an 8th grader in Arizona won best of show. See the list of films here.
My Fugleflick filmmakers created this effect for their upcoming movie. It was intended to look like the artist was painting The Scream, by Edvard Munch, then becoming the subject of the painting with his own body. There were a bunch of steps to making this illusion. Let's see if we can spell them out below.

Try Your Best is the student made movie that inspired this video effect.
5th graders will be dynamically demonstrating the concept of movement over their paintings about movement through the magic of stop motion animation and green screen. Here is the post about this lesson from when we first tried it. One big difference this time around is that we have 6 Dewey iPad stands (thanks to an ABC/25 grant) that gives us lift and stability.

I had the privilege of leading an iPad workshop with art teachers, technology specialists, and administrators using the lessons I've developed for my students at Dryden. I love knowing that the things we are doing in our art room can influence and maybe inspire other young artists and their teachers. Only 40 pieces of art art chosen from across the state for the Illinois Art Education year-long traveling art show. Out of the 683 pieces submitted by art teachers across the state our very own Jessica's artwork (currently in 5th grade) was selected. She will be honored at the conference on Saturday in St. Charles.

This snow globe effect is a fun way to teach transparency, animation, and layering with green screen. Students can add a still image, animation, pre-recorded or live video to their globe. I was inspired by the Green Screen Maker Space Book by Todd Burleson (lesson 6). I downloaded the image suggested and began trying to figure out a way to turn the project into a video with a layer of snow. I go through all the steps in this app smash in the tutorial below or here.

Download my video below and import it into the top layer of the Green Screen App by Do Ink. Use the mask tool to make the center of the globe semi-transparent (see step 6 above). Then download my white image here. Import this into the bottom layer. Now you're ready to add a still, animation, or live video to the center layer.

Our district is embarking on a ONE BOOK ONE SCHOOL event where every student reads (or is read to) the story, A Nest for Celeste by Henry Cole. Here are some ideas I thought of for connecting with the story through art, animation, and character counts.
Below is a handout I created to help students see the shapes in Celeste's form to help you draw. The original illustration by Henry Cole is a value drawing. The pencil strokes become the texture of the fur. He shows highlights and shadows by adding more or less graphite from the pencil. This technique looks more 3-D than just filling in the drawing.

1. Fly using green screen video masked into a still image over a video of clouds
2. Digitally layer in a still photo into the basket and create an animation path in Do Ink.

Henry Cole wrote and illustrated A Nest for Celeste. He was able to tell us with words and pictures about the characters, setting, and all the elements of the story. See this Fugleflick about the importance of Illustrations.
Digital Carpet Painting:
Before you can go on a magic carpet ride like Aladdin, you need your digital carpet painting in perspective so that you can view it from the side so you can climb aboard. I added my painting into the superimpose app over a plain color background. I found the tool mode for the foreground layer and chose perspective (the default). The configuration needed could be pulled and stretched by grabbing the handles on the image or you can chose a pre-created configuration at the bottom of the screen. I chose the one all the way on the right. Then, chose the checkmark to apply.
Fly on carpet (using still images)
This simple method will get your students up and flying without animating a background. They could pose as if they are riding their magic carpet paintings, use the superimpose app to layer their photo onto the carpet, and take it for a ride using the Do Ink Animation app over a background photo (like clouds). This would also create a fun still image for students' Artsonia gallery.
Moving Background Video:
One really fun way to extend this lesson into geographic/cultural studies is to have each student draw a landmark that they could fly over: Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, Statue of Liberty, Mt. Rushmore, The Pyramids, Great Wall of China, Stonehenge Grand Canyon, Red Woods, Golden Gate Bridge, Taj Mahal, Hohenzollern Castle, The Leaning Tower of Pisa, etc. See this list of 15o famous landmarks.

Paper Cut Version:
BACKGROUND: This version of the magic carpet ride lesson includes a paper cut landscape that shows foreground, middle ground, background in paper pieces. These will be animated traveling across the field of view through stop motion animation. It would be a great opportunity for students to show an understanding of foreground, middle ground, and background in the pieces they create and how they animate the scene.
GROUP ANIMATION: I'm thinking that the background animation would be a group project. Each group would work on designing, drawing, cutting, and animating their landmark landscape. Each student would make their own magic carpet video of themselves flying over their group landmark landscape. Therefore, the class compilation video will only have six backgrounds but 24 videos.
MAGIC CARPET MADE FROM PAPER: A digital magic carpet wouldn't look right with a paper cut background. So, they would need to make a paper carpet in perspective. This is a great opportunity to teach students about a vanishing point, converging lines, and how pattern would be small in the back and large in the front (relative size).
Since you are not going to use stop motion for the carpet, I just took a digital picture of the paper drawing and erased the background in the Superimpose app. It needs to be digital for the green screen effect where a student rides the carpet.

Finished: Riding over Landmarks
This link takes you to a travel website featuring 150 famous landmarks. Every student can feature a different landmark in the background video/animation. This would make the class video even more exciting as they fly over scenes from around the world.
